How do you define success in the music industry? Album sales? Hit
singles? It’s a tough question but if your answer is impact, then a
band like THIN LIZZY is a great success. The band rolled into Reading,
PA on 11-26-11 to open for Black Label Society and Judas Priest. The
unique thing is the man who wrote all the songs, sang all the songs and
who was the heart and soul of the band has passed away….25 years ago!
In the early 70′s when PHIL LYNOTT started Thin Lizzy, it was something
special, something magical. The fact the band currently features ONE
original member, and their last album came out 28 years ago is a true
testament to the impact they made. The set list was a cool collection
of songs that spanned all different phases of the band. Opening with
the always rockin’ ARE YOU READY showed the band was out to pay tribute
to what Lynott originally set out to do, kick everyone’s ass with great
rock n roll music! Concentrating mostly on older material like
JAILBREAK, COWBOY SONG and MASSACRE, the band sounded great and in
rockin’ form. The current line up includes Brian Downey on drums(the
one original member), Scott Gorham on guitar, Damon Johnson on guitar,
Darren Wharton on Keyboards and Marco Mendoza on bass. The band is
fronted by ex THE ALMIGHTY and ex CIRCUS DIABLO singer/guitar player
Ricky Warwick. Warwick is in a tough spot, replacing John Sykes who had
been fronting the band over the last 15 or so years on and off, had
claim to being in Thin Lizzy with Lynott and Gorham for the awesome
THUNDER & LIGHTNING album. But, Warwick held his own and added his own
spin to the tunes, but didn’t go so far off that you didn’t recognaize
them. A true tribute to Lynott. The show ended with their signature
song THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN, no surprise. Warwick did mention Phil
Lynott and Gary Moore in a nice tribute to them. Gary Moore was amember
of Thin Lizzy for a brief period of time, recorded the BLACK ROSE album
with the band and did some touring, Moore recently passed away. With
all the rich history of THIN LIZZY, it was a great way to pay homage to
Phil Lynott’s hard work and dedication to making some great music.
